Among the former Gold Knights, there is an important nuance: some were good and were corrupted, others were already somewhere in between. Cancer DeathMask belongs to this second category. In his first life in Athena's service, he was the Gold Knight least concerned with the goddess's ideals — a warrior who served because hierarchy and power suited him, not out of faith.
His reincarnation as a Specter of Hades is, in this regard, less a tragedy than a revelation. Clad in the Cancer surplice, he rediscovers an identity that his time under the gold armor may have constrained: that of a man fascinated by death, expert in the passage of souls, master of Sekishiki Meikai Ha — the technique that sends the living back to the realm of the dead.
Yet even in this almost unambiguous darkness, something human persists. For DeathMask was a Gold Knight — and that leaves traces that neither death nor resurrection can entirely erase. In Kurumada's universe, even the darkest carry within them a buried thread of light.
Abilities & Techniques
Sekishiki Meikai Ha
DeathMask's most powerful technique: he opens a gateway to the world of the dead and sends the victim's soul there, permanently separating spirit from body. A technique that perfectly fits the identity of the Cancer Knight — master of the passage between life and death.
Praesepe of the Ghosts
DeathMask summons the swarm of souls he has sent to the afterlife to attack his opponent from the world of the dead, creating a horrifying bridge between the living and the ghosts accumulated over his countless victims.
Evolution
01 —The darkest Gold Knight — In his first life, DeathMask was already one of the most morally questionable Gold Knights. His relationship with life and death was that of a man who had never truly chosen the side of light: he served Athena because strength and order suited him, not out of virtue.
02 —Reincarnation — a homecoming — For DeathMask, becoming a Specter of Hades is not a fall — it is almost an accomplishment. He who had always played with the boundary between the living and the dead now wears a surplice that makes him the official servant of death. His reincarnation is less a drama than a logical consequence of what he has always been.
03 —Confrontation with Shiryu — the unexpected redemption — The confrontation between DeathMask and Shiryu, during the twelve houses saga, had already laid the foundations of their relationship. During the Hades saga, something surprising occurs: faced with Shiryu's absolute determination, DeathMask seems to reach a limit. As if, somewhere, a fragment of the man he had been still remained.
