Kurumada Masami
Biography of Saint Seiya's creator
The Birth of a Legend
Kurumada Masami, born on December 6, 1953 in Tokyo, is the creative genius behind one of the most iconic manga of all time: Saint Seiya, also known as Knights of the Zodiac. From a very young age, Masami was passionate about manga and tales of chivalry.
Influenced by classic titles such as Astro Boy and Ultraman, he developed a deep interest in Greek mythology. This love for epic narratives and heroic battles would shape his future work and unique artistic vision.
The Advent of Saint Seiya
In 1986, Kurumada brought his most celebrated work to life: Saint Seiya. The manga immediately captivated audiences with its thrilling story, charismatic characters and unique blend of mythology and cosmic action.
Shueisha took part in shaping the myth, helping the author finalize his scenario — notably the concept of the Cloth, the constellation-linked armor. The original title "Ginga no Rin" was gradually transformed into Saint Seiya, with the word "Saint" evolving through several forms ("Seitôchi", "Seisenshi" and finally "Seinto").
The manga was published in Weekly Shōnen Jump from 1986 to 1990, followed by the Hades chapter as OAVs (2002–2008), for a total of 28 tankōbon volumes.
A Distinctive Artistic Style
Kurumada's art is defined by its dynamic line work and sense of motion. Battles are depicted with raw energy and powerful poses, creating visually stunning scenes. The Knights' armors — detailed, ornate, sometimes extravagant — add a remarkable aesthetic dimension.
His collaboration with animators Shingo Araki and Michi Himeno for the Tōei animated series produced an iconic design, preserved in the Ikari artbook that remains a reference for fans.
Beyond Saint Seiya
Although Saint Seiya is his most iconic work, Kurumada created other successful manga. Ring ni Kakero (1977–1983), his first major series, laid the foundations of his epic style. Fûma no Kôjirô (1982–1983) refined the elements that would bring him fame with Saint Seiya. B't X (1994–2000) revisited the concept of armors and cosmic battles in a science-fiction universe.
His works are characterized by recurring themes: courage, unbreakable friendship, struggle against adversity and the quest to surpass one's own limits.
