Olympian Mythology

The Greek gods in the Saint Seiya universe

Mythology at the heart of the work

Masami Kurumada drew deeply from Greek mythology to build the world of Saint Seiya. The Olympian gods are not mere cultural references — they are the central figures of an entire cosmology in which human warriors are pawns in divine games.

Each narrative arc corresponds to a confrontation with a different god: Hades reigns over the Underworld, Poseidon over the seas, and Zeus dominates Olympus. Athena, reincarnated on Earth, is the only goddess to take humanity's side.

The Olympian gods in Saint Seiya

ZeusKing of Olympus

Father of gods and men, master of thunder. Zeus is the supreme power governing cosmic balance. He never intervenes directly, but his law structures the conflict between Athena, Hades, and Poseidon.

Role: cosmic arbiter of the Holy Wars between gods.

🦉
AthenaWisdom & War

Protective goddess of humanity, she chooses to reincarnate on Earth rather than sit at Olympus. Her benevolence toward mortals sets her radically apart from her peers.

Role: divine protagonist — protector of the Saints.

💀
HadesUnderworld & Death

Brother of Zeus and Poseidon, ruler of the dead. His hatred of Athena dates back to ancient Holy Wars. He seeks to reign over the world of the living by reincarnating every 243 years.

Role: main antagonist of the final arc — Hades chapter.

🔱
PoseidonSeas & Earthquakes

God of the oceans, he seeks to purify the world by flooding it. His reincarnation as Julian Solo temporarily deprives him of full divine judgment — his humanity is his weakness.

Role: antagonist of the Poseidon arc.

🔥
HephaestusForge & Craftsmanship

The Olympian smith god. According to Saint Seiya's mythology, it is he who forges the Cloths from starblood and the essence of constellations.

Role: creator of the Cloths — never directly confronted.

😴
HypnosSleep

Twin brother of Thanatos, gods of sleep and death. Servants of Hades, they appear in the Overture film as his divine generals, far beyond the power of any Gold Saint.

Role: antagonists in the Overture film and the Hades chapter.

🌑
ThanatosDeath

Personified god of death, twin of Hypnos. His destructive power falls directly on Elysion during the final hours of the Hades chapter.

Role: guardian of Elysion — adversary of Seiya.

Mythological References in the Cloths

The zodiac constellations have their own Greek myths. Virgo represents Demeter or Persephone; Scorpio is tied to Orion, slain by Artemis; the Gemini are Castor and Pollux, sons of Zeus.

Sagittarius is Chiron, the wise centaur and mentor of Achilles. Aquarius is Ganymede, cupbearer of the gods. Capricorn is Pan transformed into a goat-fish. Each Cloth thus carries within it centuries of Greek mythology.

Kurumada goes further: he incorporates Norse narratives (Asgard, Odin), Shinto elements (the Cosmos as a vital force), and Buddhist references (Shaka of Virgo depicted as a reincarnated Buddha), creating a unique and universal mythological syncretism.
