Phoebus Abel is the God of the Sun of Olympus, Athena's brother and the main antagonist of the first Saint Seiya film. Resurrected after a long divine slumber, he returns to Earth with the firm intention of subjugating humanity to his merciless light. Summoning his faithful Corona Saints — warriors fashioned in the image of the solar Crown — he declares a fratricidal war against his own sister, refusing to acknowledge Athena's legitimacy over the world of men.

His presence in the Saint Seiya universe illustrates the idea that even gods can sink into tyranny when their pride takes over. Facing the Bronze Saints who refuse to bow, Abel encounters a resistance he had not anticipated: that of ordinary men carried by an extraordinary Cosmos.
