DeathMask of Cancer
♋ Gold Knight — CancerThere are characters who embody the dark side of a work with disarming honesty. DeathMask is the most radical example in Saint Seiya. Where other corrupted Knights find excuses in manipulation or madness, the guardian of the Cancer temple is simply, fundamentally, cruel. He loves sending souls to the Underworld. He loves the faces of the dead lining his temple walls like trophies from an eternal hunt. There is nothing to regret in his nature: it is simply his truth.
His Sekishiki Meikaiha mirrors him perfectly — a technique that leaves no chance, that deprives its victim not only of life but of any prospect of an afterlife. Sending a soul straight to the Underworld, condemning it to wander in the darkness of Hades without ever truly having fought its death — this is an act of metaphysical violence that few enemies in the series dare to match. DeathMask, for his part, practices it with a casualness that speaks volumes about his relationship with the border between the living and the dead.
For perhaps this is his most fascinating trait: DeathMask is not afraid of death. He is its guardian, its familiar, almost its companion. The souls of the thousands he has condemned to the Underworld form around him a funereal court of which he is the satisfied sovereign. Facing Shiryu, he falls without denying himself — consistent to the end, with no last-minute conversion, no tears of repentance. A redemption would perhaps have cost him more than death itself.
