DeathMask of Cancer

♋ Gold Knight — Cancer

There are characters who embody the dark side of a work with disarming honesty. DeathMask is the most radical example in Saint Seiya. Where other corrupted Knights find excuses in manipulation or madness, the guardian of the Cancer temple is simply, fundamentally, cruel. He loves sending souls to the Underworld. He loves the faces of the dead lining his temple walls like trophies from an eternal hunt. There is nothing to regret in his nature: it is simply his truth.

His Sekishiki Meikaiha mirrors him perfectly — a technique that leaves no chance, that deprives its victim not only of life but of any prospect of an afterlife. Sending a soul straight to the Underworld, condemning it to wander in the darkness of Hades without ever truly having fought its death — this is an act of metaphysical violence that few enemies in the series dare to match. DeathMask, for his part, practices it with a casualness that speaks volumes about his relationship with the border between the living and the dead.

For perhaps this is his most fascinating trait: DeathMask is not afraid of death. He is its guardian, its familiar, almost its companion. The souls of the thousands he has condemned to the Underworld form around him a funereal court of which he is the satisfied sovereign. Facing Shiryu, he falls without denying himself — consistent to the end, with no last-minute conversion, no tears of repentance. A redemption would perhaps have cost him more than death itself.

Abilities & Techniques

Sekishiki Meikaiha
DeathMask's signature technique is utterly cruel: he sends his victim's soul straight to the Underworld without leaving them the slightest chance to resist. Death is not merely physical — it is spiritual, final, with no hope of reincarnation or return.
Communion with the Souls
At the gates of his temple, DeathMask has hung the faces of the thousands of souls he has sent to the Underworld. This morbid trophy is no mere decoration: he maintains an active link with the world of the dead, which grants him extraordinary psychic resistance and an unsettling familiarity with the realms of Hades.
Death Scissors
Spectral pincers that tear through flesh as easily as cosmic energy. This close-combat attack reveals an instinctive aggressiveness and a mastery of hand-to-hand fighting that balances his reputation as a ranged Cosmos fighter.
Domain of Cancer
As the Knight of Cancer — sign of the moon and the cycles of death and rebirth — DeathMask governs the border between the world of the living and that of the dead. His temple is an antechamber to the Underworld, and he is its merciless jailer.

Evolution

01 —Servant of the Shadow — Among the Gold Knights aligned with the usurper, DeathMask is one of the most convinced. He does not follow Saga out of naivety or blind loyalty — he follows power, and power lets him freely indulge his darkest impulses. His cruelty needs no justification: it simply is what he is.
02 —The Temple of Death — His Cancer temple is an installation of terror. The faces of the dead lining its walls are both a display of power and a warning: all who pass here will die, and their soul will be captive for eternity. DeathMask has turned his role as guardian into a macabre work of art.
03 —Defeat at Shiryu's Hands — It is Shiryu, the Dragon Knight, who will end his reign of terror. The confrontation is brutal and revealing — DeathMask is not a character built for redemption. He falls without regret or conversion, consistent to the end with what he has always been.
04 —Reappearance in the Underworld — Like several Gold Knights, DeathMask reappears during the Hades arc, sent back among the living to serve the God of the Underworld. His familiarity with the world of the dead grants him a new stature there — that of a natural servant of Hades, returning, so to speak, home.

Characteristics
DeathMask is one of the rare Gold Knights to embody true moral darkness, without ambiguity or forced redemption. His cruelty is real, owned, almost philosophical in its consistency: he believes that strength is the only law, and he practices it without remorse.
His relationship with the souls of the dead reveals a morbidly fascinated psychology. For DeathMask, the Underworld is not a punishment to dread — it is familiar territory, almost a home. He flirts with the border between life and death with an ease that is chilling.
Despite his darkness, DeathMask is a Gold Knight in full, gifted with formidable Cosmos power. He is a reminder that the title of Gold Knight is no guarantee of virtue — only a measure of strength.
