Manigoldo of Cancer

Manigoldo of Cancer, a Knight of exuberant character and unorthodox methods, engages in a titanic battle against Thanatos — the god of Death himself. True to his destiny as Knight of Cancer, the zodiacal sign governing death and the passage of souls, Manigoldo is the only one capable of facing this divinity.

Manigoldo's heroic sacrifice — using his own soul as a shield to weaken Thanatos — is one of the manga's most poignant moments. His death in combat, conscious and freely chosen, illustrates The Lost Canvas' central philosophy: these Knights do not fight to live, but so that others may live. Degel and Sasha are devastated.
