The Lost Canvas Ep.16 — God and His Pawns

The true face of Hades' plan begins to emerge. What the Saints took to be a series of battles to be won is in reality only a part of a far vaster game. Hades let them advance, let them win certain battles — because those victories ultimately served his own interests.

The revelation is hard to accept. Being a god's pawn is the worst humiliation for a Saint whose honor is his foundation. Yet even aware of having been manipulated, they have no choice but to continue — for to stop is to let the world perish.

Hades, seen from the perspective of the impassive god, is not cruel for pleasure — he is simply indifferent to human suffering, as a chess player is indifferent to the fate of pieces on the board. It is this indifference that is the true threat.
